Photoshop can't find installed ICC Profile

Hi!

I generated an ICC Profile for my scanner and installed it by right-clicking on it (Windows XP). Normally i should now be able to select it in the "assign profile" dialogue in Photoshop. But it does not appear in the list of profiles! I've tried deinstalling and installing, but without success. I wonder if Photoshop does not update the list of selectable profiles? Any hints?

First, I'd check the directory to see if the profile is actually there in the right folder ... windows/system32/spool/drivers/color ... probably it is, but just in case ...

Second thing to look at is that profiles come in different classes and you may be trying to assign it incorrectly. My scanner profiles are type "Device: scanner/camera" for example and there are limits as to what I can assign it to. Though I am able to do Image > Mode > Assign Profile with my scanner profiles ...

Third possibility is that a profile can have two names, one internal and one that you see listed and perhaps you're not seeing the right name, though if you've generated the profile yourself you should probably be able to see it.

I'd guess # 2 or # 1 ... how exactly are you doing the "assign profile" step, when you read in an untagged file or with Mode > Assign Profile? Should work ...

I wonder if Photoshop does not update
the list of selectable profiles?

Close Photoshop and reopen it and it should have access to all the profiles in the ../color directory in XP.

Regarding Bill's #3 possibility, there's a simple, free viewer/editor that you can use to view or change the internal profile name at:

Thanks both of you for the info. I found my profile under the name "no description" in the list of profiles when I did "assign profile" in photoshop. I also installed the tool and it shows the name as a popup info, but I couldn't find a way to change the name. Am I missing something in the right-click-context-menu? The only new entry I get is "move to backup folder"....

If you have the scan of the IT8 target that you used to generate the profile I personally would just use this scan and re-run the scanner profile generation software and if that runs smoothly I'd name the profile during that process. This would be the cleanest way to do it, rather than re-naming the existing profile, since sometimes if the profile generation software doesn't let you assign a name it means the profile generation went badly (ie, there are out of bounds numbers or meaningless values, etc).

In other words, perhaps there was a problem with the profile generation and that's why the resulting ICC file doesn't have a name. Also possible that you just skipped the step that allows you to add the name, but typically there is some default assigned. At any rate I'd be suspicious of this ICC profile myself.
