File/Open/crash

not sure of the what the problem is but thought I'd ask here first. After launching ps cs, I simply attempt to open a local file. The program stalls, hangs and does not respond, forcing me to quit the program. Any ideas? Should I uninstall, reinstall? I've only had the program on the machine for a week. Thanks.

Can you provide some additional information on your computer (i.e. hardware), and what utilities (antivirus, system monitor, etc) are installed/running.

sorry, yes:

IBM Thinkpad T42p 2.1 mhz, I gig RAM, nothing else running-AV disabled. WinXP

(able to open files from file browser but NOT File/Open=crash)

Thanks.

What kind of file?
What is the file extension?
Can your copy of PhotoShop open any other image file? Or does it crash trying to open *any* image file?
Does the file open in any other program ... such as IrfanView?

any image-jpg bmp tiff gif. They all open without a hitch in MS PhotoEditor. Again, I can open any file from PS File Browser but not from the menu. thanks.

What are your system specs ... as referred to

Operating System version (SP 0 ... SP 1 ... SP 2)?
Amount of physical RAM memory? (NOT 'Virtual RAM')
Amount of available disk space ... how many physical drives and how much is actually free on each?
How long has it been since you defragged the drive(s)
How long has it been since you cleared out your system ... *and* PhotoShop .... Temp subdirectories?
What are your swap file settings?

Is this a new problem with an existing install of PS CS that worked at one time ... or is it a new install of PS CS that doesn't work (and never has worked)?
