On my laptop, where I’ve launched Photoshop 5.5 before, I suddenly could not.

It says "not enough memory (RAM) to launch Photoshop".

Naturally I’ve rebooted and stopped all other applications but it still said the same thing.

This is an odd message since I have 192 mb of RAM on this machine with plenty of temp drive space, too

Any ideas?

What, if any, changes (however insignificant) did you make on the laptop between the last time it would launch and when it wouldn’t?

BTW I think 192MB RAM is low for useful use of PS – if you’re keeping the laptop a significant time I would add more RAM.

Perhaps one of your memory modules has gone bad? How much memory does it say is installed during POST?

You don’t say what OS is on this machine, but it’s possible that if you’ve turned off or reduced the virtual memory settings on it (assuming it’s a Windows machine), you may not have enough memory to run it.

Check out the virtual memory settings, and set it up so that the operating system manages the size of it.

Don’t you also get this message if your scratch disk is too small?

i’m having the same problem.

i double click the icon and i get a little pop up that says not enoug memory (ram) to launch photoshop.

i’m currently running windows 98se with 700+ mbs of ram and over 5 gb of free space on my drive.

the problem happened after i reinstalled msvcrt.dll because accidently deleted it while uninstalling macromedia shockwave.

it worked fine up until that point but now it doesn’t run the program but imageready runs just fine.

any solutions

It happens to me too! I have 1 GB och RAM and a shitload of free spac on my hard drive, so the problem isn’t how much memory there is. Ther has got to be some sort of setting somewhere that just ain’t right.

You might try your increasing you cache settings "edit>preferences>memory and image cache". My PS pref was set very low and combined with WinXP’s habit of holding onto files in its own cache it can get pretty full quickly. Also purge your RAM by shutting down (not entering Standby) at the end of the day. Hope this helps.

What PS version? I don’t exactly remember, but wasn’t there a patch for using PS with machines that have 1Gb+ of RAM? Or was it some other Adobe software?

Try to reset configuration data. While Photoshop is starting hold dow Ctrl+Shift+Alt. Or delete manually file Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Prefs.ps which you can found there %USERPROFILE%\Applicatio
Data\Adobe\Photoshop\7.0\Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Settings for WinXP. Fo WinXX that in c:\Windows folder
