I have an area that I would like to confine text to. Is there a way to select this area using, for instance, the marquee, and then when you use the type tool, it will automatically adjust the font and size of the text so that it will take up that space? Thank you!

If you mean actually size the text to fit the box, no.

Try this. Drag the type tool out to the size of rectangle you want. Then type it in a small enough size to get all the text in. Finally, select all the type, and fiddle with the size controls to make it fit.

If you want an irregular shape for the text, draw a path (circular, triangular, tear drop, what ever) and, with the path tool, click inside the path and type. The type should fit inside the path to the best of its ability. You will have to play around with the text size.

You can set it up so that the text will adjust automatically to fill the horizontal space in most cases. Set the justification for the text in the box to Justify All (the last paragraph alignment options), and bring up the Justification Options dialog from the Paragraph Palette flyout menu and set the Glyph Scaling Minimum and Maximum to 50% and 200% respectively. You still have to adjust the vertical size of the text yourself.
