"Could not complete your request…." when painting on a mask.

I’m trying to paint on a layer mask in my shiny new copy of CS, but I get the error: "Could not complete your request because of a program error" every time I apply a brush stroke. At first the program was crashing everytime I applied the first stroke, so I reinstalled it and am now getting the behavior described above. Help!!!!!!!!
