Hi everyone,

I had a question about how paths were handled in CS vs 7.0

I’m a 3d artist and recently there’s been tools to unwrap a 3d model to paths, ie using paths to set up some kind of layout by which one can know where they are painting on a 3d model.

Think of it as just paths are a way for me to see how a 3d model is laid out. Just like guides. The cool part about them is that they are zoom independant so they are always sharp and crips as guides.

The question I have is that with CS now it seems that if i have paths turned on and i try to do an operation like free transform onto a layer, the paths are what is affected, just like if i select a section and delete the paths are deleted. they are no longer functioning as they did in 7.0 where they could only be affected in the paths tab.

Can someone confirm this for me? Is this new behavior a feature or maybe a bug?

Thanks again for checkin out my problem

Are you sure that the paths are not stroked or rasterized? it could explain that bitmap tools work on them…
They should have a vertical line behind them in the layers palette if they are still vector.

yeah i’m pretty sure i have not rasterized them

basically just make a new path in the path tab
draw some shape

now go back to layers
make a new layer and paint some scribbles

and do a free transform, ctrl t

and you’ll see that you will affect the path not the layer

this behavior was not in photoshop 7

its not really a big deal but it handicaps a nice workflow feature for texturing 3d models

Not sure why this has changed, but press Control Shift H for Hide Target Path before you press Control T. Now you’ll be transforming the layer rather than the path.

(Or go to the Paths palette and click away from the path to hide it before using Free Transform)
