Jpeg - cant open from disc

491 views11 repliesLast post: 11/27/2004
I have a disk that has around one hundred pictures on and is saved in jpeg format. However when i try to double click on them they try to open up in adobe photoshop 7 and a message comes up stating that due to an unknown write in the jpeg format it will not allow me to open them up. I have tried to use a different program but everything fails to open them. It seems like they are there and they are no corrupted but why cant i open them ?

This disc is the only copy that i have of the pictures and would love to be able to print some off for her grandparents for christmas any one got any suugestions or ideas please.

Iam using windows 98 SE as the operating system.

The actual message on the adobe photoshop is :

Could not open photo album_opf_files/pt0001jpeg because of an unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found.

Anyone got any ideas.....

I have tried other software and all seems to fail..

Have you tried to open up the files with another program ? If not,
you should try XnView and/or IrfanView

http://www.xnview.com/
http://www.irfanviw.com/
Maybe they can open up your Jpeg files.

Btw.
JPEG2000

There is a free JPEG2000 plugin for Photoshop at

What makes you think they aren't corrupted? It sounds like they might be. Did you try copying to your HD and opening them from there? You should avoid opening files from disks or across networks in Photoshop.

This worked for me a couple of times when I got that error message. Copy the file to your desktop. Change the jpeg extension to jpg, or eleminate it all together.

Open your app first and then use your open file command, on a mac it is Command O, and select that image. If it still doesn't work, then I am thinking the files are corrupt.

If there are really valuable images to you, there could be some places out there that do recovery of files. That might work too.

Just a re-cap of what others have said in their replies:

1. Copy the files to your HDD
2. Attempt to open in other programs, as PS is really picky about JPG's. Irfanview, which is a freeware program, is not so picky, as is Ulead's PhotoImpact
3. Make sure that if the files DO open, you burn another CD. Though saving a JPG, as a JPG will cause some loss in quality, if you DO get them to open in another program, you might want to Save_As a high rez/low compression JPG for use in PS. I've had tons that gave same error in PS, but opened just fine in other programs. A Save from that program then allowed PS to Open them just fine. Just remember that a re-JPG'ed file will have a bit of loss.

Most of all, Good Luck,

Right-click on one and see if you can open with Internet Explorer or other browser and then, if it does open, right click and save as. It may or may not work.

Peadge :-)

Make sure you do copy anything you wish to be editing from a disk to HDD, this helps reduce the chance of errors

Hope this helps
