Content of layer is not directly editable???

Hi, I am new to photoshop, and whenever I try to use a tool, like a brush or bucket fill on a shape, it says that "could not use the tool because the content of the lay is not directly editable". plz help.

It means what it says - you're trying to use an editing tool on a non-editable layer (like text, shapes, etc.)
