Dude, where is my lighting styles filter?

I have been using Photoshop on pretty low level for work and am now starting to get into the fun stuff. I was following a tutorial and tried to apply the lighting styles filter and it is grayed out. It is grayed out in both Photoshop 5 and 7.

There is a folder in the Plug-ins\filter folder called Lighting Styles in both and they have 18 or so likely looking files.

So why is it grayed out?

What mode is the file in? Try RGB if it's not already. Most filters don't work in all modes.

You might check your image mode...some filters can only be applied to images in RGB format or Grayscale, 8 vs. 16 bits/channel, etc.

Thanks, all I was in CMYK.. most of my stuff is for print. So what do I do if I want to havee an effect in CMYK? Do it in RGB and convert at the end?

Yep, the last thing you should do is convert to CMYK. Don't go switching back and forth if you can avoid it, or you can cause weird color shifts.
