Is there a way I can add shadows on top of textures, without painting over the textures?!?!?!

Im trying to texture a wood grain on a house, and when I go to add shadows on a new layer, it still paints over the texture so I cant see them…..How can I fix it so the textures just become darker from the shadows?

Set the layer blending mode to "Multiply". (It’s at the top of the layers palette.)
