printer colour does not match screen

Hey everyone, not necessarily a photoshop question, but I am trying to print something and the colour on my printer does not match my computer screen. Is there a way to fix this, or is it just my printer?

Part if it has to do with the specifics of your printer, the kind of ink you use, the kind of paper, as well as the color management settings and profiles set up within PS.....

How much is it off by?

What is on your screen can never exactly match what is in print; the laws of physics forbid it. However, it should generally be able to get close, with the exception of certain colors like vivid, saturated blues and greens.

If your printer and your screen do not match, there are many possible reasons:

- You are trying to print colors such as vivid blue which you can never get in print;

- Your printer has an ink nozzle that is dirty or clogged, or is out of one of the ink colors;

- You are using thw wrong color profile for your printer;

- Your screen is not calibrated;

or any of a hundred other problems. You need to be more specific: What are you trying to print? In what way does it not match your screen?

You either need a better profile for your monitor and/or printer, or else less good eyes (matching a set of colors using different sets of primaries is fairly hard).

If you're using OEM materials in your printer, then the standard profile is probably good enough, unless you're *really* fussy.

So the most likely problem is that your monitor needs to be adjusted. The cheap way: Manually adjust to match the print. The good way: Get something like the Colorvision Monitor Spyder and Photocal software which will build a custom profile for your monitor.

Margulis' book is good on many topics, but he's not exactly a color management faithful. His book is also more for the professional printers than for the desktop printers.
