Filter to change B&W image into rainbow colours

I am looking for a, preferably free, Photoshop filter, that will work with Paintshop Pro, to will convert a grayscale image into a graduated color image, evenly assigning the colors from blue, through green to red to the different gray levels. Thus black would be pure blue and white would be pure red or the other way round. The filter would need to retain the detail in the image.

I understand that such filters are used for astronomy to enhance images and reveal detail, so if you’re an
astronomer, you might have a suggestion.

what to are looking for is called a gradient map–
Photoshop has one built in—I don’t know of a third party filter for this….try google

Within Kai’s Power Tools 3.0 Gradient Designer (created in 1995, still widely available), there’s a mode called "greyscale mapburst," and that is EXACTLY what it does. You can cluster color according to gradation and make a hard edge, soft transition or very gradual. You can designate the exact color you want a particular tone to be with a color picker (thus the "designer") and you can squeeze, blur, desaturate, etc each color within a dragable bracket on that tone.

The following image was created in KPT 3 Gradient Designer in Greyscale Mapburst Mode:

The base surrounding this Kai Krause portrait was also created in KPT 3 GD in the same mode and imported as a greyscale heightmap into the terrain editor of Bryce 3-D:

Thus, your original greyscale image can exist in 3-D space with the all the clustered colors intact, if you care about 3-D.

I believe KPT 3 is included in Corel’s KPT Collections which is at the OBSCENELY low price of US$99.00 retail.

Experiment with the Gradient tool.
A: You can set up your own gradients to your own requirements, B: You already have it so no extra cash outlay.
