JPEG Image Problem in Web Pages

Why does a JPEG image file (Save for Web from PS 7.0) shift a web color slightly? Gif can reproduce this color (#888888) just fine, but a JPEG shifts the color slightly pink. It appears neutral in PS and in GL, but preview it in a browser, and it shifts.

Has anybody ever had this problem?

The JPEG image is situated on cell background made from #888888, and you can really see the difference between the two colors.

(The JPEG in question is a photo image, with a solid color fill top and bottom to match the proportions of other images in a gallery. I’m using GL to create Set Image URL actions to load a new image, when a viewer clicks a thumbnail.)

Thanks!

Because JPEG undegoes compression, loss of information. More compression / less quality = more image degradation. Lessen the compresison Increase the quality to reduce the effect.

You may wish to try this work-around — make a 1×1 px jpg in that color and use it as a tiled background image in the cell, table or page.
