Can someone tell me

(This is totally off-topic here. But anyway:)
Are you talking about NEWS or EMAIL?
In case you are talking about news: use a newsreader application (aka ‘newsagent’) via NNTP (network news transfer protocol) instead of googlegroups web-interface in a webbrowser via HTTP.
Using a newsreader (even MS Outlook Express will do) you’ll *subscribe* to the groups that you are interested in, and retrieve all the new messages (or at least their headers) in that group while you are online. Then you’ll be able to read and write offline.
Outlook Express will automatically mark groups/threads in red colour (IIRC) that are containing an unread response to one of your own messages.
BTW: a prerequisite for using usenet the way it is intended is access to a newsserver (nntp-server) that allows both retrieving and posting. Ask your internet service provider (ISP), he should offer you an account on his own newsserver.
Your newsagent (e.g. Outlook Express) has to be set up to connect to that very newsserver. You’ll send your messages there, and retrieve other people’s messages from there (newsservers exchange their messages
[forwarding], to make sure that messages are spread and available on any
nntp-server.)
… I won’t teach you all you need to know about usenet. Just educate yourself.

Fred
