no preview option availble in color sliders

when adjusting hue and saturation in Photo shop 5 with the preview option checked nothing changes. Also when I push enter, nothing really happens. I’m obviously doing something wrong. I’m brand new to this software. I’ve always shyed away from this software because it is so very large and difficult to learn. Perhaps it’s still trying to tell me something. Thank you for your help.

Are you trying to use Hue/Sat on an adjustment layer or a blank layer?

the small box on the bottom right would indicate that I’m working on the photo layer which is titled ‘background’. There are three other layer options there and they are all blank checkerboards when I highlight them.
