Maybe I’m using the wrong software to print photos – but I often use Word because I can get different sizes on one sheet of paper and I can also position them the way I want. If I continue to use Word, how can I be assured of getting good color? I should mention that my Epson 3200 Perfection Pro scanner, me LaCie Monitor and Epson 1280 printer all have ICM profiles. The problem is, I don’t know how to apply a profile with Word. Also, how can I calibrate Word so that the fonts print the same color as I see them on m my LaCie? Or, is there another piece of software that I should use for printing that will give me the same flexibility that I’m used to with Word? Thanks……..

Since Word is not profile aware, save your images in sRGB on Windows, or ColorMatch or Apple RGB on Macintosh. In your printer setup, set your printer to use ICM management, and assign the appropriate profile for the paper you are using.

I can’t find where, in Word, that it gives me the choice of assigning profiles – although it has an ICM option in the printing preferences. Do you know where it is? The manual is of no help.

Assuming you’re on windows, profiles are assigned under the color tab of the printer properties.

Mike, I think he is confusing the ICM toggle in the printer driver for a Word dialogue box. Irrespective, will Windows convert the file for him once he identifies it both in the driver and under Printer Properties? (I know it should theoretically do this, but will it?)

I think you are right on the money. The short answer is yes, if the driver is set to go through ICM, then the profile under the printer settings Color tab will be used for printing.

It’s worth mentioning once again that if you also convert within photoshop, it is easy to double profile your printer output. I always suspect this when someone complains about a magenta cast with an Epson printer. —

So true. The reason I asked is, since I always do color work in CMS aware software, I just wasn’t too sure if Windows would actually do the job. On my old Mac system I knew that ColorSync was always there to work in the background.

I wish XP had ColorSync and CMS aware apps. Life would certainly be simpler.
