Re-typing on color background

Using PhotoShop 7.01, a color drawing with typed words superimposed. When reducing size, the typing is fuzzy and illegible. Need:(a) to erase existing words, and (b) to re-type the words with larger font size. Problem: by erasing the words, the background (whether in color or converted in black-white) is also erased. How to erase ONLY the words? Or else, how to restore the existing background BEFORE typing the new words?

I’m not 100% sure what you’re after, but it is usually best to keep the text on a separate layer, as a tiff or PSD. You can resize that "master" image and, if necessary, change the font size since it’s a layer. The final step would be flattening, if necessary.

I’m guessing that your type is not live but rasterized and part of the image. If you can’t completely redo and follow YrbkMgr directions you may be able to clone out the text. Or select the text with magic wand and move selection to a similar background area then copy and paste, line up over text then clean up with clone tool. Then retype.

A third guess. You are starting from a GIF, which is in indexed mode. If you immediately go Image/Mode and change to RGB, when you type the first type, it will be a separate layer that will not destroy the image behind.

Save the file as a psd, and then save for web to get a new gif. Use the psd file in the future to make corrections.
