Adobe shows no patches, so I presume I’m up to date.
XP (Tablet PC edition), 655360Mb RAM (it’s my work computer. I didn’t choose this. No grief, please.)

From time to time nothing will work on a layer unless I make a copy of the layer. Then once I make a change, and do nothing else, the layer once again will take no changes unless I copy it AGAIN. Also, the adjustments submenu will dim out for no reason until I copy the layer once again.

Also does not write thumbnails. Never did, although I have Preferences set to do so.

It sounds like what you’d get if you were locking editing on the layer (the paintbrush icon on top of the Layers Palette) Check to see if that’s the case. If not…

Reset/trash Preferences. Also, did you have any anti-virus running when you installed? Do you have Norton running in the background?

I checked that very carefully, and none of the lock attributes are on. Besides, when you create a copy of a layer, it copies the lock attributes, correct? When I copy the layer, the copy is editable – once.

Okay, I will look into how to trash the preferences. I hate to do that. Seems drastic.

Yes, Norton is running and I cannot change that. The company locked it all up so I can’t turn it off or modify it from the Norton panel, nor can I kill the job. Bastards.

It’s not so bad. Save your workspace before doing it. One thing you can do, which is a pain but pays off later is to record an action of setting your preferences the way you want them and save it. Then when you trash prefs run the action and everything is back the way you want it.

Norton is very bad and can cause all kinds of problems with Photoshop. You must inform the company of that.

I have to present a strong case. The ITS department tends to shoot first and ask questions later.

I will look for information, and would appreciate any URLs or pointers anyone can suggest concerning the issue.

They should know that you should always disable antivirus programs when installing software because sometimes files that need to be install;ed can be mistaken for viruses or parts of viruses and get blocked. Aside from that, I have seen and heard about many problems with Nortons and Photoshop over the years. Here’s a couple URLs

http://www.thecityreview.com/newcomp.html

When using the type tool, Photoshop runs very slow.
The most common cause is Norton System Works, in particular, the Recycle Bin Protection :

Do a Google search on "Norton Problems", etc.
