Not that I’m aware of, but you can, if using a Windows OS, use the Print Screen function to capture either the entire desktop, or the active window, and then paste the capture into a Photoshop file.
Alt-PrtScr for active window Ctrl-PrtScr for desktop
In respect to sreen captures if I resize them even a little bit say 20% or so they look very bad (they are mostly Palettes with drop downs) Have changed the Sreen Resolution but to no avail.
Depending on your operating system, you may have to add screen capture software. There is a lot of them around for various OS’s. Check your OS install CD’s too, there is often a shareware or demoware version. (MacOS X comes with SnapzPro X)
With Mac OS 9, you hold down your Apple and shift keys and then hit 3 for the whole screen, or 4 for the part that you want to crop it to. Then find the ‘picture 1’ on your hard drive (or what ever number it gives you depending on how many you have taken), then open it in PSE, it will be a .pict then so just change it to a .jpg or .psd and there you have it. With Mac OS X you will have to purchase Snapz pro, no, you won’t have to buy it now, as in the post above, it now comes with X. Jane
Is that what that thing is?! I’ll check it out more; I found the folder on my hard drive today, but I didn’t even look to see if it was a demo or not. So what’s it good for? I take screen shots all the time just using the keyboard method and then edit in Elements.
It’s a lot more capable Screen Capture program. You can choose different formats, create boarders, select quality, include/or not the cursor, imbed watermarks, scale, automatically create thumbnails, as well as take movies of what’s happening on your screen
Elements does not have screen capture-ability. If you’re using Windows and would like something more targeted than the PrintScreen key, you might try Irfanview (freeware image viewer). It has a very easy to use screen capture feature.
Huh…. I just checked and couldn’t find Snapz Pro listed in any of the software bundles, pro or otherwise. If it’s the full version (and not a demo) that’d be a pretty good deal. Snapz Pro goes for $60.
Hi Jodi, I really know that a G5 would be way overkill for me, but 4 years ago I got my G4, and never regretted it. He thinks that I would ‘grow into it’ but I am more frugal than he is, and don’t want to spend the extra $ especially if some of my software is not up to G5s. There was some interesting info here about perhaps Mac will be upgrading their whole line, but I shall wait. My G4 with its OS 9, is running so well and all my software is happy, so I am waiting very contentedly. I sure wont go out and buy any Mac with out first running the information by everybody here. The G5 comes without a monitor, so that is another factor, but big CRT monitors are cheap, but the flat panel Mac monitors are so nice,,,,,, No, I am waiting and very happy with what I have got. I promise I won’t buy anything without your advice here. Jane
Patti, I downloaded that to open ‘one’ image i was having a problem with…a while ago…haven’t been in it since …never knew it had that…thanks !
Quick hints: Open Irfanview and press C on your keyboard and it will take you right to the screen capture dialog.
You can choose which part of the screen or window you want to capture or have the cursor included if you want — that’s something PrintScreen cannot do.
Hi, Joe. Maybe they aren’t including now, but they were for a while. Bundles change fairly often. Could be they figure panther does it well enough on its own.
BTW, the $69 version is the one that also lets you record QT movies of your actions. The basic still version is $29.
Yeah I’ve got the $69 version and just upgraded to version 2 (another $29). I use the movie capture to make movies of how-to-do-things-on-your-Mac for my mom and a few of my clients.
Even if Apple was only bundling the $29 version that’s still a pretty nice program. Of course I take a lot of screen captures so a good program like Snapz Pro really gets me going. And yes, I know and freely admit that I’m a geek. 😉
Yeah, it’s a great program. Now that I think of it, I know it was included with the pro machines in 10.0 and I think in 10.1. Haven’t paid much attention since then.
There’s Grab in mac os10.2 and 10.3. It’s in Applications-utilities. After you launch Grab, click Grab and select About Grab and you will see the ‘for screen capture "notice. David
Yes, it would be good. My G4 came with Snapz Pro X, not a mention of demo anywhere until you run it. You get dirty great blue letters over the image "DEMO VERSION" or some such. Still it only cost 19 dollars to upgrade to the without dirty great letters version.
Jane, i’ll keep you posted if i hear an juicy news on tech TV about it. If your hub wants to buy his own G5 then let him…keep yours….this way you can see what all the hipe is about…and it might better be some really good hiping at that price ! 😉
Cat Schwarts from ‘call for help’ just bought a G4 15"laptop and she lives near an airport with singles and got online automatically…lucky girl !
I do think Apple might have some goodies coming in the near future from what I’ve heard,,,,waiting,,,and listening,,,,, Forget the LCD and go for the CRTs? Things might get interesting if the prices go down and the machines get upgraded,,,,waiting,,,,, Jane
Jane, i don’t know….Apple has some mighty nice widescreens 😉 ….I have no idea if they can be calibrated though…Lots of nice flat screen crt’s floatin’ round too. If I had the cash I would have went that direction with Samsung…but very happy with what i have 🙂
Hi Jodi, If I got the iMac with the 20" screen, then it would be somewhat limiting but beautiful, but for upgrading, if I got the G5 and bought another CRT(I already have a great View Sonic 17"), purchase a 19" then I would be able to use the extended mode. Would be nice to have the Apple LCD, but for that $1000, I could get a huge CRT(have the room). I will really have to research this, as if you get the big ‘engine’, it is always better. At least that’s what hubby says. (He is right, about trucks anyway, as I have the big one in my GMC and it deals.)
This is a decision that is fun to look at, I really don’t know what I want yet. Oh yes I know what I want, but what I *need* is the question. Haven’t researched the fan noise yet either, that is important to me too, as we live in the country, and I dislike background noise. Must go and hang out in our local new Apple store, its only under 10 miles away,,,,,,
I love to research this stuff, love to hear what all you experts have to say, and I know I will end up with what I need(want?). Its just the monitor dilemma, that is what is the major expense beyond the computer itself. Those Apple monitors just glisten and shine in that store, they have the biggies, and they make you want to get them, but in our own homes, are they really necessary? Hey, this is fun, I hate shopping for anything except trucks, cars, and computers. Jane
Jane, since you aren’t a TV person then go ahead and spend on the monitor ;)…ya can’t take cash with you and it’s pretty much worthless if you are only using it to pay bills beyond your control…ie; power, phone etc…
I really should go and spend some time in the Mac store tomorrow, it is very close to my birthday, too close. Yes, I enjoy comparing and researching stuff like this, its fun. Almost as much fun as when you actually make the purchase. Edit; forgot to say that it sure is fun just to go there and play with all the machines. And I learn even more from you all here, far more than the sales people themselves in the stores. Jane
PrintScreen button on a PC Windows will automatically make a screen capture and place it in the clipboard. Open Elements and NEW, then Control V to paste the clipboard onto this new (already automatically sized) canvas.
Just to follow up – I played with Snapx Pro X today. It is a full version installed on my computer and not a demo, but we weren’t getting along well. I got two pictures, but I never figured out exactly how I ‘took’ either one! It’s cute, but Command, Shift 4 does all I need, so it’s too bad I can’t pass it along to someone who’d appreciate it. 🙁
Since I found out about Command-Shift-3or4 I have used it quite a lot … it works on the new iBook too!! … still debating if we should put 10.3 on the iMac or stick with 10.2.6.
Still with OS 9.2.2, no troubles or software obsolescence here yet, but looking forward to the new Mac. Then I will learn OS X, but don’t want it on this G4. Jane
For most people the Mac OS’s built in screen capture is enough but for certain applications it’s not. For instance, you can’t include the cursor in an OS X screen capture.
If you’re actually using the screen capture in printed/published material, you want to use a good image. With a program like Snapz Pro I can choose the capture as a .psd or tiff file for example. With the Mac’s screen capture, I’m limited to a low rez .pdf. I just took a screen capture with SnapzPro set on tif and got a 1.5mb image. With OS X’s screen capture it was 328kb. That’s a pretty big difference. Have you ever received a pdf software manual where all the captions/figures/images were blurry and hard to make out (and basically looked like an amateur put it together)? I have and I can tell you they were probably done with the OS’s built in screen capture function. I can avoid that and produce high quality images for just such an application. In one situation that I actually got paid for, I produced a high quality user manual for a database I designed. Users could look at the manual on the screen and the images where all crystal clear and very readable. They could also print the pages out and have a nice readable hard copy. Lets say instead, I’m creating a html users manual. SnapzPro is really handy for this as it’ll create perfectly sized thumbnails of images for use as clickable links.
Here is a screen capture (made with OS X’s capture tool because how can you take a screen capture of a screen capture tool? 😉 ) of some of the options you can choose for your image: <http://homepage.mac.com/josephhenry/snapz/object.jpg>
SnapzPro (or any decent screen capture program) also makes it easier to capture certain element of your desktop. For example, if you just want to capture a drop down menu or a window you can choose the "Objects" option and the menu or window is selected automatically. No croping/cleaning up of the image is usually necessary. Here’s a shot of the main SnapzPro pallet where you can choose the type of capture you want:
As Barb B. and I mentioned before you can also take a QT movie of what’s going on on your desktop. Most people probably wouldn’t find a use for this but as I mentioned in a previous post, I often use this to make how-to movies for my mom and a few of my Mac clients. One client in particular, a 70 year old retired airline pilot who just bought his first computer two years ago, needs someone to show him how to do things on his Powerbook. He just bought a digital camera and I whipped up some QT movies on using iPhoto, editing his pictures and printing. I burned them to disk, charged him a nominal fee and then dropped the disk in the mail. That’s much cheaper for him then me having to make a house call at $65/hr and he gets to keep the disk for reference. Here’s a shot of the movie options:
Most people probably won’t ever need more than the built in screen capture included in their OS. For me, though, I need a more powerful solution. Some of what Snapz does can be done in PSE but it’s just much easier and quicker to do it in Snapz.
That’s a very cool post with all the graphics. How come no one else does that…except Jodi?
I played with the movie function of Snapz Pro yesterday. It starts out with "ACTION!" . Then…how do I stop it? I couldn’t find a way of doing it. After futzing around on my computer it occurs to me to press the command+shift+3, the same way it starts…then I hear a loud "CUT"…I had one very long movie to process.
One of these days you’re going to have to tell us what- and locating- all this cool stuff is you have on your Mac.
Where’d you get that gorgeous desktop image? And you keep it so uncluttered.
Well, you have to know a little html (very little) and I suspect not that many people do. Also, if we all started posting images like crazy, we’d probably bring Adobe’s server to a stand still not to mention annoy a lot of dial-up users.
As for starting a stoping movies/screen captures, I changed the hot key so that all I have to do to start or stop Snapz is hit the F9 key. Of course if you have a program that uses that key, well there could be problems.
Hi Joe, Thank you for all the information! I was going to resist the temptation to visit our local Mac store today, as all I need to do is grocery shop, but after reading your Mac info, I can’t stay away. Jane
Mark, the folk who used the newsreader can’t see the graphics on threads…otherwise…all my posts would be graphied up ! ;)…and Bob and Adobe would hate me 🙂
Hi Jodi, I always use the forum web way, I don’t know how to use a newsreader. But I always assumed the web was easier, as you just scroll thru the threads. How would I go about trying to view this on a newsreader? Is it sort of like e-mail? I am very dumb about some computer stuff, lots of stuff I’ve never tried. Jane
Jane, i don’t know…like you I prefer the web based forum. Basically because i check other adobe forums. I really would like to try illustrator so i pop in there from time to time…the full photoshop forum sometimes has some good threads as well. Anyways, big shopping day for you at Apple ?? Good Luck…you deserve it !
You can access all the forums from a browser base and have spell checker as well. It would be nice if I had brain checker but maybe that is in the next version.
Big shopping day coming soon, I just got back and wow those new Macs are so impressive! The store owner was there and he spent about an hour with me, and has shown me that I don’t need the G5. The only thing that I would have needed, wanted, is a better word, is the extended monitor mode, but he said that the 20" screen would be adequate for me. Panther, wow that’s quite an OS. I will keep my G4 with 9.2.2 here on the desk for a while however. And he will install all the ram I want. The iMacs are very very quiet, fan noise is almost absent. Thats important to me, as we live in a really quiet area. The software bundle is quite a lot, Quicken and extras, and the whole iEverything gamut. My head is still spinning,,,,,,gotta think about this for a while,,, Jane
Patti, Yep, I just did a few Screen Captures with Irfanview and they came out fine. I do have the "Print Screen" key but have never found out how to use it. Underneath it has "Sys Rq". Years ago I had that key and all I had to do was find the screen I wanted and hit the key. Quite a while back one of the helpful forum men guided me to Irfanview. Marty
Can I capture a screen image with photoshop? I dont see any option to do that…

press <ALT>-<Print> (copy the screen as an image to clipboard)
Pressing just PrtScrn works, too.
OP – If you are using a Mac, do as Tacit says and/or get to the help and see the many other options of capturing screen, window, selected areas (with/without cursor).

If you want more flexibility you might try "Snagit"." It can be found at http://www.techsmith.com/default.asp for $40. It can do regions of windows, objects and scrolling windows. It is just a tad tricky but it can come in handy.

Are you on a Mac or a PC?
Both can do screen captures, but it is built into the operating system–you do not use Photoshop to make the screen capture. On a Mac, hit Command-Shift-3. The screen capture appears on the Desktop as a file.
On the PC, hit the PRNTSCRN button. That copies the screen to the Clipboard. Make a new Photoshop document and hit EDIT->PASTE. — Art, photography, shareware, polyamory, literature, kink: all at http://www.xeromag.com/franklin.html
Check out the screen capture feature of the "free for private use" Irfanview program (Windows). When it ia activated it will capture the screen, store it in the directory you specify, in the file type you specify, on a time interval you specify, or when you press <ctrl>-<F11>. http://www.irfanview.com/

I’m sure there is a simple keyboard shortcut to capture the screen. Any one know what it is??
Thanks

Better yet, Alt + Print Scr and you only get the window on top.

There is no screen capture function in Photoshop. In Windows you can use the print screen key with the key modifiers like Control, etc. to get different captures. If you want a good third party solution then SnagIt is a good choice http://www.techsmith.com.
Yeah, even with OS Xwhich has a pretty comprehensive set of built-in screen grab utilities, and which can capture in many different formatsa 3rd-party utility is nice to have.
It creates the smallest rectangle it can and fills in the blanks with white. It does have a Save As png or gif option, so I don’t know if it can export the transparency. I’ll have to give it a try yo see.
PS. The red line in the screen grab is not pointing at the snipping tool. This clip was just something I already had on my website in connection with another problem I was having.
"It creates the smallest rectangle it can and fills in the blanks with white."
Ah, OK. It just saves a step in Photoshop.
Does Vista allow for a bunch of different screen grab formats? And how easy has MS made it to change between them? In OS X it can be done at the Command Line level (if one is so inclined. Me, I prefer to use the function in a free maintenance utility I have):

When you choose to save, you can save as jpeg, gif, png or html(mht).
I don’t know whether it can be controlled from the command line.
There are utilities you can download that are better than the lame Windows Print Screen function. I used to have one (can’t remember the name) on an older computer that let you run a marquee like on a Mac. Look around on the web.
‘ALT’ + ‘PRT SCR’ will do it in at least XP and newer.
EDIT – I was thinking of grabbing just the Levels window, which ALT + PRT SCR works well on. The actual histogram and tools palettes/panels cannot be automatically & individually identified by PRT SCR.
Don’t you have an expensive image editing app that can crop a full screen grab? 🙂
PRT SCR gives you the entire screen (or screens, in my dual monitor case). ALT PRT SCR will copy only the top (active) dialog box. Good for doing tutorials.
I agree with Dave that Snagit works well if you do more than a few of these.
snagit also has a free older version available. it’s like one version back (i think they’re on 8.somthing, the one that’s free is 7.something). googling around should find it.
