Why are many ‘older and experienced’ (as they say) such snobs about anything Adobe? Are they just pretending or what.
I know of people that use PSP 8 to adjust jpgs so they can print using better software that CS5. I certainly do not use Adobe for PDF.

The following is a serious sample from yahoo something:

What an insult to Photoshop that people would suggest using Infranview or Faststone Photo Resizer or anything else other than PS.

Why on earth did you buy a $500 program to resort to a free one?

I’m shocked and embarrassed to say I am the list owner. I think I’ll just turn off the computer and go get ready for the big game.

infranview is pretty good actually, i know a few people who use it for basic manipulation. Personally i find ps slower and slower to boot up since cs3. SO if its only a quick edit you need they why not use simple quicker software

i guess i am agreeing with the troll

People are free to use whatever they want. Maybe Photoshop is too complicated to learn, or they think it is? I used to think that many years ago (I had Paint Shop Pro 7 at the time) but then kept trying PS (7) and got hooked on it. Now I have CS3 and tried the trial of the newer ones and I’m fine with what I have. I got it on ebay (new) last year for $86. Took me awhile of watching to get it, but I was determined. Now, to have enough time to learn what PS can do, it’s never-ending surprises for me.

I have CS3 and it is kind of slow to load but I am a plug-in junkie (LOL) I never paid much attention to bridge but did a tutorial about PS basics (Lynda.com) and learned about it and now use it a lot. I tried Infranview once, but remember it as being kind of slow and confusing. Maybe I have it confused with something else. I sometimes use Kodak EasyShare software (talk about slow, you have to select a picture, bring it up , click EDIT, every little step) I only use it for one thing, the "cartoon" effect which is pretty good (in the fun effects).
I guess it’s all what one is used to in a way.

I think you guys are mssing the point
all that is mentioned are photo thumbnail viewers
when someone downloads several pics, it is nice to
be able to view and slightly edit them and delete unwanted pics when accomplished, then we go into photoshop and do final editing. throughout the years I have download thousand of fantasy pics from newsgroups. I will then modify, add, subtract parts for my entertainment. Also viewers are great for editing camera photos, meaning , delete the junk

You are missing the point. Most are not Photoshop snobs, we just like the vast number of adjustments that Photoshop offers. That’s not to say that PaintShop Pro isn’t good editing software also, it’s just that Photoshop offers more tools, that’s all.
I have IrfanView and Paintshop Pro, but I find that I always use PhotoShop to edit my pictures because I can do everything I need to do with PS. If I were to use different software, I might not be able to accomplish the same things.
What you need to consider is that not everyone needs
Photoshop…especially if they just want to make a few basic adjustments to a picture. Spending $600 for Photoshop to do some basic editing would be ridiculous, so you’s be better to spend less and get Photoshop Elements or Paintshop Pro.(or go the free route and use IrfanView.)
By the same token, if you had Photoshop and used it to do most of your more involved photo editing, I think that you’d see the shortcomings of any other program.
As for the slow loading of Photoshop…well, I use PhotoShop CS3 and it loads in 3 seconds.(I have hundreds of plugins too.) Then again, my computer is using an Intel 990X chip which has 6 cores running at 3.46 Ghz, and 24GB of DDR3 RAM running at 1333 Mhz, so I never have any problems with anything being slow.

I have PS CS4, Elements 9, and Lightroom2. Still, my first run-through for downloaded images is in FastStone. The obvious misses are tagged, the images are sorted by tags, and all tagged images are deleted. The second run through is in FastStone using the compare images side-by-side to decide which of multiple shots of the same thing to keep.

No editing of any kind is done in FastStone, though. That’s done in CS4. I admittedly under-utilize Lightroom2 and use it just as a keyworded filing cabinet.

FastStone also has an easy-to-use re-numbering method under "Tools". I like to use the date (2012-02-09-001) as the file number, and this can be done by typing in the date plus ### for a series. FS can also automatically number the images by date and time. Right-clicking on a thumbnail can take you to your editing program.
