Image Resize / canvas resize

I have about 1000+ images I want to resize, the goal I am looking for 240×240, but a lot of them are differnt sizes example:160×300 or 300×160 but I want make all of them 240×240, i know how to set up actions and run a batch file but every time do they do not come out right either 240×160 or 160×240 I cant get the canvas right i guess that is what i am looking for, and i have differnet extension on them *.png, *.jpg, *.gif, etc…..I dont know if that makes a differnceor not. Can some one help me please!
