CS4 on Win XP

If I open a dialog window (for example, edit/Color Settings or help/about) and close the dialog, a single blank line appears in the middle of the menu line (from File to X). If I minimize/restore PS window, the menu line returns to normal. If I mouse over an item on the menu line, its appearance returns to normal.

Any solution or setting to fix this?

Thanks

Mike

First please try to reset the preference
Then try enable/disable OpenGL and update the Graphic Card driver and update Photoshop to 11.0.1

Which preference do you want me to reset?

I am running 11.0.1.

Preferences/Performance/GPU Settings is grayed out with the message, "No GPU options available with Photoshop Standard."

If OpenGL is present on your system, you can enable it in Photoshop Preferences.
1 Do one of the following:
(Windows) Choose Edit > Preferences > Performance. 2 In the GPU pane, select Enable OpenGL Drawing.
3 Click OK. The preference affects new (not currently open) windows. No restart is necessary.

Since it is grayed out I cannot enable OpenGL.

Preferences/General/Enable Flick Panning is disabled since OpenGL is not available.

My graphics card is an ATI FireGL V3100 with 128MB (Driver Version
6.14.10.6451 6/24/2004).

I read the info at
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb 405711&sliceId=1.

The link on that page to ATI drivers (ATI: ati.amd.com/support/driver.html) is broken. I did go to http://support.amd.com/us/Pages/AMDSupportHub.aspx and downloaded FirePro_8.563_XP32_74139.exe (ATI FireGL/Pro/MV Software Suite Multilanguage revision 8.563 dated 2/4/2009) Description: Package Includes: Display Driver ATI Catalyst Control Center HDMI Audio Driver (Multi-Language)).

I installed the new driver ATI (version 8.563.0.0 dated 12/10/2008).

After the driver update, Preferences/Performance/GPU Settings is still grayed out with the message, "No GPU options available with Photoshop Standard."

I clicked OK — the problem remains.

What do I now need to do?

I think what Ping (Post 1) was intimating was to rest the ‘default’ preferences. To do this double-click the Adobe Photoshop icon to start it and then immediately (during start up) hold down Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS) to reset the default settings.

I know that Ping said that the issue may be related to OpenGL, but I think that she’s mistaken, despite being a Photoshop QE.

This issue has to do with the Adobe OS Widget Library (OWL), and is something that can be easily reproduced.

OWL is effectively a skin over the top of the Windows API, and doesn’t seem to be consistently covering the Photoshop API. I’ve seen this issue with Illustrator CS4 as well, but it’s harder to reproduce.

To reproduce, open a modal dialog (like Image Size or Levels adjustment). It’s not entirely consistent, but happens most of the time.

Here are a couple of screen shots:

This is also mentioned in the FAQ’s – top of page but I’ll give you the link here as I’m already posting 🙂 <http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.ef4a07f/1>

Did it. No change.

I still get NO GPU options available with Photoshop standard in Edit/Preferences/Performance/GPU Settings.

What next?

I do not get FAQs in a news reader.

Thanks

These are exactly what I am seeing.

Does a fix exist?

Thanks

While there isn’t a fix for this, this only occurs with the Windows Classic theme on XP. If you switch to one of the other XP display themes, you can workaround this.

In CS3 my menu fonts and colors are the windows defaults. Does a way exist in CS4 to do the same thing?

I only have two display themes, Windows Classic and Windows XP Style. I have heavily customized the Windows Classic theme to meet my vision requirements.

The XP theme does not appeal to me. Do other themes exist somewhere?

Shame one has to alter the way they have done computing for several years because a Vendor puts out a product that has a bug.

Thanks

I switched to Windows XP and, as you said it would, the issue went away.

I still get NO GPU options available with Photoshop standard in Edit/Preferences/Performance/GPU Settings still is grayed out with the message that NO GPU options available with Photoshop standard.

Does that mean one must install extended to have that setting?

Thank you for the help.

MikeV99: Here are some drivers dated 2/4/2009 for your card. Now it made read the same drivers but if you read the notes, several opengl problems have been fixed for XP.

< http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/fire/Pages/fire_xp.asp x?type=2.4.3&product=2.4.3.3.2.3.1&lang=English>

I would also suggest downloading the latest directx 9c, .net 3.5, and c++ for 2008. A good defrag would help too.

Also if you have ATI CCC try unchecking triple buffering located in 3D all settings.

Thank you for your suggestions. I had found those updates and installed them yesterday.

The blank line through the menu was not resolved by installing the new drivers. However, I changed my theme from classic and that has solved that problem. Weird that a theme would cause so much difficulty.

I still get NO GPU options available with Photoshop standard in Edit/Preferences/Performance/GPU Settings still is grayed out with the message that NO GPU options available with Photoshop standard. I did find a comment buried in one of the KBs that said that GPU requires a video card with 512MB — mine only has 128MB.

I guess I need to up my RAM and video card memory. I hate installing a new video card though.

PS.

I just found this KB

http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb 405064&sliceId=1

I ran the Allow Old GPUS registry change and I now have GPU enabled! I guess 128MB video ram is sufficient.
