Yes.

Does CS4 take over default file preferences?

Yes. But you can right-click and use Open With.

They install completely independent of each other in their own directories.

Settings are not taken over, and file associations are setup in Windows, not PS. You must choose in Windows Explorer which program is opened.

Right click on an image file and select "Open With". then Choose the application.

Many thanks for your helpful and informative replies; you’ve answered my questions. BTW, no problems with understanding and assigning file associations etc. in Windows…I am familiar with that sort of thing. I was mainly curious to know, if when I install C4, if it would grab all the file associations now assigned to C3. "Open with" will indeed take care of that, and yes, I can always reassign file associations in Windows anyway, so no real problem there. Cheers……………..frank
