thumbnail printouts on 8.5 & 11

My friend has a folder with several large high quality JPEG files. He wants me to make a thumbnail print out, with the smaller pics all with the same height, but differing widths. I would also want to save the thumbnail printout as a JPEG or BMP to transfer on a disk. He wants a number under each thumbnail. Is this something that Photoshop is automated to do?

So I am looking for a feature that would automate this. Each large pic is reduced to 2 inch height with title underneath.

Actions can be used in Photoshop; however, Eric Gill’s excellent suggestion of using: http://www.cerious.com is a better choice in my opinion.
