Hi all, I am trying to work out how I can open a multilayer pdf in Photoshop or Illustrator so that it maintains it’s layers.

Is this possible?

Illustrator might do that, but Photoshop cannot — the PDF layer model is nowhere close to Photoshop’s layer model.

Hi Daniel, Hi Chris,
Maintaining the layers while importing to Photoshop is important to me too but I gather from Chris’ reply that there is no way. If there is a work around, even a complicated one, I would appreciate hearing about it. I have the design standard edition of CS4 – maybe InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat would help. I don’t know and I’ve looked long and hard for a way. Maybe ‘no’ is the final answer. I hope not.

As Chris has said it can not be done, BUT there is some thing that you could do, that would be to extract all the pages to new documents (This could be done using my PDF Processor)

File -Scripts – Load Files into Stack.
