Lightroom consumes all memory

I am running 1.4 on a reasonably well endowed PC. Last week Lightroom starting consuming all memory. With nothing else running it takes 1.8GB or the 2.0 installed and the system starts thrashing like crazy. Once it has reached the max the cropping function fails, image display becomes painfully slow, and loading Photoshop is totally impossible.

Has anyone else seen this run-away condition and might be aware of a solution?

I know nothing about Lightroom but you can bring PS to its knees by cropping to, say, inches instead of millimetres.
