Hello,

I’m an advanced Photoshop user but I am hardly literate in Illustrator, and I was wondering if, and if so how it might be possible to create these effects in Photoshop?

Sparkles:

This seems like it might be the simplest.. any ideas?

Grunge:

How do you create the general "grunge" effect?

Gloss:

How would you recreate that glossy feel?

Glow:

I love this effect but wouldn’t know where to begin to replicate it..

Thanks for any ideas!

There are brushes available for sparkles and grunge (some come with PS and just have to be appended to the existing brushes via the drop-down menu, others are available via Adobe Exchange.

Likewise there are styles for glossy buttons already available via the styles drop-down menu and the glow could be achieved with filters.

"Just experiment" is about the best possible advice anyone can give, because it’ll teach you to use Photoshop as just a tool to express the artistic vision you have in your head.

Pursuant to making Photoshop bend and behave to your will, you may get some instructional & motivational juice by doing a Google search for tutorials. There are bazillions to be found all over the place. If you use a set of search terms formatted in the following way, you will find enough to keep you busy for a lifetime. Plug search terms into Google like so:photoshop tutorial|tip|technique *type desired technique here*The pipe character – | – separating "tutorial|tip|technique" stands in for "or" in Google searches, and will look for pages that reference any of those terms, along with the others.

Thanks everyone –

I took the advice and performed some searches.

I created a VERY cool custom sparkle trail which I’ve already applied to several different existing pieces (and new ones!) of mine – it’s lovely!

The grunge ended up being the easiest – I now have a template that I can essentially copy and paste grunge elements from – and I have a tutorial which explains them.

The "glossy button" turned out to be the most difficult by far – it seems there is no uniform way to create these and all have varying looks. This was pretty frustrating, complicated by the fact that most people could not document their processes well. I did end up with 2 great-looking, high-quality buttons though that I can now use as templates.

The light burst effect that I was trying to achieve ended up as a tutorial for something else which included adding light bursts. I picked up the technique and applied the bursts for my purposes. I’m very happy with the result.

Thanks so much!

That’s great to hear, Seron. You should’ve linked us to your results!

And thanks for not whining about my suggestion to do your own searches. So many folks come here with questions like yours and expect to be handed perfect answers. Some get awfully bitchy when they’re asked to do some of their own homework.

I’m a firm believer in the "Teach a man to fish, and he’ll eat for a lifetime." part of the old adage.

Then, you wrote:"…complicated by the fact that most people could not document their processes well."Tutorials: writing, editing, annotating the screen shots, proofreading, making sure everything is complete for your readers…it’s not easy, especially for techniques that are quite involved. Some folks are good at it, and some aren’t. It’s one thing to teach someone when you’re sitting right beside them, and when you have an idea about their general skill level and familiarity with the application, and with their computer in general. You can watch a student, answer their questions immediately, and guide them when they veer off course. In a tutorial that sits in a book or online, you have to cover as many contingencies as possible, because there’s no simple way to interact with the student if they perceive some part of the instructions as incomplete or unclear.

Hey guys,

Since I got a request to post my results – here they are!

Sparkles

Here is the dynamic sparkle trail I made: < http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v500/johnnyboye00/Miscella neous/sparkleandglow_layered.jpg>

Grunge

This is the template I created: < http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v500/johnnyboye00/Miscella neous/basicgrunge.jpg>

Gloss

I created 2 versions of "glossy" buttons (1 for each of the variations of instructions I found): < http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v500/johnnyboye00/Miscella neous/basicglossybutton2.jpg> and < http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v500/johnnyboye00/Miscella neous/basicglossybutton1.jpg>.

Glow

This was the effect that I was trying to reproduce. I’m pretty satisfied with my results: < http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v500/johnnyboye00/Miscella neous/lightbeams.jpg>

Along the way, I learned how to do this: < http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v500/johnnyboye00/Miscella neous/lightstreak.jpg>

THEN, I applied all of these effects to a potential web site piece: < http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v500/johnnyboye00/Miscella neous/CashKernelProductionsLogo_new2.jpg>

WOW!!!! 🙂
