so for some reason i went to maximize a youtube video which coincidentally crashed my computer while my photoshop file was saving

does anyone have any advice for a good .psd restoration / recovery software?

There is not much you can do with a broken PSD file. Try opening it in something like Infranview. If that works, you might get something, otherwise, consider it lost.

When work become valuable due to the amount of time invested, it is wise to save your backups with differing names. When I was freelancing, I used to save each backup with a version number, so that if one died, I would have an older one to go to rather than starting over. If disk space got scarce, as it did in those days, I would kill some of the oldest versions.

File recovery tools is what you need. Nothing specific to Photoshop as everything is just bits/bytes. 🙂 Don’t know if what you recover would be useful, I’ve had mixed results whenever I’ve used recovery tools.

You could try my (free) PSD Recovery plugin: <http://telegraphics.com.au/sw/#psdrecover> Please let me know if it helps. (Only works 1 layer at a time though.)

checked it out but i cant manage to get it installed

they said i just have to create a sub dir within the Plug-Ins folder and itll come up on the filters menu … not quite as easy as they say…

Who says that? If you’re referring to my plugin, it’s a File Format – you just put it in your Plug-ins directory and re-launch Photoshop. Check the enclosed README for how to use it.

YouTube is a menace, isn’t it. So is Windows; a modern O/S (OS X, Linux, etc) isolates processes so that your web browser cannot bring down the whole computer.
