I would recommend a /PAE switch before the /3GB switch. The PAE switch enumerates the RAM.

Your Mileage May Vary. In other words do not expect that you will get all the RAM allocation you expect at all times.

To Sid:

Try adding /userva=2900 after the /3GB switch.
Google userva for info

Doing this fixed a similar problem for me once
