It’s possible that any adjustments done in ACR could reduce your overall dynamic range as exposure/contrast settings etc can be changed from what was shot or the files converted to linear raw. I suspect that this is the reason for this warning, but I’m not 100% on this.

I’d suggest pushing around some settings in ACR to test this.

I follow the general instruction for making HDR images: In ACR make sure that all images are set to the same WB and otherwise leave all other adjustments at their default values. I would do the same if I were dealing with raw (NEF) files.
