Any idea why it’s a separate application rather than simply integrated into Photoshop?Because Image Ready was brought out so that Adobe could compete with Macromedia’s Fireworks (which is an excellent app for web image manipulation) and say that they have addressed the problem of using PS images on the web. It makes them look good, keeps the suits happy, and no doubt added a few cents to the share price because those not in the know thought that Adobe could now compete head-on with Macromedia in that software field. Essentially, it’s IR is what you use for the web when you haven’t anything else or don’t know any better.
I’d presume it’s because a .psd file would be inappropriate for the ImageReady functions, but that’s just a guess.

Photoshop is image manipulation software which comes with Image Ready as an Add-In.
Image Ready is an app which pretends to be useful for making web images, but isn’t.
Photoshop is what sensible people use for serious work.

You can not do animation in Photoshop and You can not do roll overs in Photoshop.Which is why there is Fireworks, which does these things properly, unlike IR (spit!) 😉
