I have just bought Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0. How can I stop it "getting pictures" every time I insert a dongle in? <G>

Honest, I am fed up of Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 kicking in trying to get photos while I am busy and trying to concentrate of the other work I am doing or have in mind. The memory stick in question has literally 500 photos on it amongst other things. So you can imagine that this is no one second distraction.

If I can’t stop this nonsense, I intend uninstalling the damn thing. It is becoming a damn nuisance.

Assuming your memory stick works the same
as a card reader:

Go to the organizer to download your pictures.
Click on the camera icon there. (or "File" > "get photos") Follow the directions and
select the device you’re downloading from.
Then you should see thumbnails of pictures
contained in the device.

There should be lots of checked boxes there.
You need to deselect them all. Press
Control + A. Then click one of the boxes
to make the check mark disappear. All the
checks will disappear. Now replace the check
marks by the pictures you do want to work
with and click "get photos".

Thanks for the info which I will certainly make use of.

I am sure the memory stick works the same as any other "external drive".

However, my problem is that I do NOT want the software to start "getting" the photos and adding them to my "library" of its own volition as soon as I have connected a memory stick or say an external disk to the computer. I mean an external disk might contain thousands of photo files.

How can I stop this happening every time I connect an external hard disk or flash drive to my computer? In other words, I want to stop this automatic feature from constantly "getting files" to add to my "library"?

I am sure there must be a button or some command somewhere within Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 to stop the software from acting on its own without authorization by the user.

But thanks for the info you provided anyway.

This is what I did in Elements 4.

Open Photo Organizer

Click Edit

Click Preferences

Click camera or card reader

Uncheck the box by "Use Adobe Photo Downloader"

Joe, who also hated that feature

Thanks a million. I’m sure what you said will work with version 3.0 as well. I’ll give it a try when I get home in a day or two.

I’ll give the Adobe Photo Elements 3.0 a fair chance now to see what it is capable of doing. I find it a bit slow though. And v4 is supposed to be even slower!

I know Adobe Photoshop is the equivalent of MS Office in the photographic software world but I’ve had JASC Paint Shop 7 on my computer for a few years now. To be honest I think JASC is a great photographic software and I got on fine with JASC Paint Shop Pro 7 right from the word go. Don’t know what is happening with the JASC since Corel bought them up in 2004.

"May the best man win", as they say.

I’d be interested in hearing what features in Elements 3 and 4 seem too slow. My own experience is that Elements takes a while to get going when first starting up. However once it’s running the speed seems OK.

I have Paint Shop Pro 8 (Jasc). I purchased it and
Elements at the same time. But I found Elements easier
to learn so I abandoned Paint Shop Pro. However
some people claim Paint Shop Pro is a more advanced
program.

It would be great to hear about the specific
differences from someone who is comfortable
with both Paint Shop Pro and Elements.
