A friend of mine is a teacher and we were wondering if educational software (CS3 family) can be used for commercial purposes -> making profit? I’ve been getting mixed signals from people/websites and would like to see documentation that says specifically what is allowed or not allowed.

thank you 🙂

Yes. There is no limitation on what you can do with the educational version of Photoshop. Macromedia did not allow commercial use of its software, prior to its merger into Adobe, but Adobe never had such a policy. I believe that the current version of even the Adobe products that were formerly Macromedia (e.g., Flash) have moved to the unrestricted educational license. That is definitely true of Photoshop, in any event. Same product as the normal "commercial" version, but at a lower price for people who meet the educational license requirements.
