How does export handle RAW files?

Using the elements 3 organizer, it appears that I can select a number of photos in RAW format and export them as jpegs. What is it doing exactly? Does it run each photo through the raw converter using the default settings? If I change the Camera Default setting, does it change there as well.

Is this a quick and dirty way to get elements to batch process RAW files?
