I need to figure out how to turn an image to B&W and then put color back into parts of the picture. In Photoshop 6.0 I could do this by using the eraser and choosing "Erase to History". Does the "Erase to History" feature exist in Elements? Thanks

Jill,

No, sadly, it doesn’t exist in Elements.

One way of doing it is:

Duplicate your layer
Desaturate the duplicate
Then add a layer mask … see below for an add on that will enable you to add layer masks (http://www.cavesofice.org/~grant/Challenge/Tools/index.html) Then all you need to do is simply paint on the layer mask to reveal parts of the colour layer.

That should have the same effect 🙂

Or, after duplicating and desaturating, just use the eraser tool to get back to the colored area underneath. Wendy’s method is better because it’s easier to adjust later on.

Jill,
Also look at the recently posted forum topic "B&W w/ color selection help".
