I have installed PSE and am working on a web development project for a client. Involves taking pictures of his products-cartridge heaters- stainless steel, cylindrical, and very reflective- needless to say, all backgrounds I have used (when taking the pictures) are nicely reflected onto the product which makes it very dificult to seperate the product image from the background. Does any one have any recomendations on what type of background to use in this situation?

If your issue is that you are seeing the surroundings of the product reflected in the surface of the product and you don’t want to, then the solution is to buy and understand Light: Science and Magic. It will tell you the techniques to use to get the results you want in the camera, greatly facilitating post processing. It really makes the difference for professional results.

Rodney,

Steve Caplin in his book "How to Cheat in Photoshop" does one tutorial using a stainless steel pedal bin with a similar problem. The way he gets round it is to select a small horizonal section of the bin, copy it to a new layer, stretch it vertically using the move tool then substitute it for the original stainless steel.

Its very effective …
