To get a cut out text effect, Set the Fill of the Text to 0% and add a Bevel and Emboss Layer Style with a "down" direction selected.

Another method is to select the text with the Magic Wand, copy the layer you wish to be beneath the text, and press Delete. Add a Bevel to this layer to get the cut-out effect. Turn off the eye for the actual Text layer to see the effect. However you will end up with the Beveled look around the outside edge of the file. This can be eliminated by copying and pasting the outer edge of the original layer above the beveled one.

Oh….with the second method, an Outer Bevel with an "up" direction will probably look better.

I just now tried this for the first time using PSE 3.
See it here;

Sorry, I don’t know how to get the image to appear in the forum thread.

To be able to post an image to a forum thread or Newsgroup, it must be a "binaries" Newsgroup or forum. This is a text forum so supplying a link to the image is the way to go.

Nice job!

I have PSE1.
How do I go about getting that result?

I didn’t understand your question. I thought you wanted to know if it was possible with PSE 3.

Anyway this is how I did it, there may be other ways.

1. Create a new blank document with a white background.
Make a new layer above it, Command>J (Mac).
Fill the Background (bottom) with color using paint bucket tool. Type text on Layer One (top).
The layers Palette should look like image #1.

Activate the top layer then hit Merge Down, Command>E (Mac). The Layers Palette should look like image #2.

With the Magic Wand tool click the text image, Then Select>Inverse. With the text selected, hit Edit>Cut.

You then should see the yellow showing through.
Add a drop shadow from the Layer Styles palette to the text layer.

Last flatten image.

This is based on using solid backgrounds. And I have never seen PSE 1 so I can only describe PSE 3.

Tom, have a look at the bottom of your image in pixentral. There is a text edit box containing some HTML code. Just copy and paste in here like this:

Ah, so that is the secret.
Thanks.
I wonder, if you stuck "target=_blank" in there, would it come up in a separate window?

Sure, why not … it’s just plain HTML, all the usual rules apply.

Tom …

I don’t know if PSE1 has this but PSE2 does …

Click the little arrow at the side of the Type tool and you will find the Horizontal Type Mask tool … using that you can:

Create you background layer
fill it with yellow
Create a new layer above and fill with white
Select the Horizontal Type tool
and type in your text
then just do Edit>Clear

…. it looks good with pattern as a background layer 🙂

Wendy, I new there was some way with that type mask tool.

That’s the way to go if it is available in PSE 1.

Tom,

I’m still not quite following.

All I’m gettng is text that has a drop shadow to it.

Can you post the links to Image#1 and Image#2?
They’re not showing up in your post.

Thank.

Did you click on the word "Here" in my post?

You should try Wendy’s technique if at all possible.

In PSE1 there is not a Horizontal Type Mask tool just Horizontal Type. 🙁

When you clicked on the little black arrow next to the type tool there wasn’t any mask tool? …. 🙁

OK then …. Try this instead ..

Fill your background with yellow
Create a new layer anf fill with white
Now do your text … any colour will do
Then open the layers palette and control click on the text layer (which will select it)
Now single click on the white layer
Edit>Clear

Discard the text layer into the trash.

You should now have a white layer with a hole in it letting the yellow layer show through … I hope 🙂

Wendy,

That worked beautifully!!! 😀

Just needed to add the Drop Shadow from Layer Styles to complete it.

I am definitely saving this to my CD.

In PSE1 there is a tool that works like a mask. When you click the Horizontal Type tool, look up at the tool bar to the left of where you select the font. You will see 2 little boxes. the one on the left is solid & the one on the right is an outline. Click the outline one to make your cutout text.
