I am new to Elements (I have 2.0). I know that I will be embarrassed when I get an answer to this. I am trying to erase. Instead of erasing to a white color I am getting a gray and white checkerboard. I have both background and foreground colors as white and 100% opacity. I ‘think’ that I did some erasing when I first installed the product and it worked. What have I done?

The grey and white checkerboard indicates transparency. If you move the object in your file to another image, the background will show through in the checkerboard area. If you want to keep a a white opaque background, go to layer>New>background from layer. Background layers can’t be transparent.

You can if you wish change the size and colour of the grid – or remove it – by going Edit/Preferences/Transparency…
