Correcting the white (burned out) eyes caused by the flash

This happens to subjects far from the camera when I use the off camera flash. Their eyes turn white. Please help.

If this happens a lot with a particular flash unit, it sounds like you may need to consider getting another one. What camera and off-camera flash are you using? Maybe someone here can offer some suggestions that will help avoid the eye burn out.

Suggest bouncing the flash, e.g. off the ceiling, thereby avoiding a direct trajectory. Ken

Are you metering/exposing for a primary subject closer to the camera, and are those properly exposed? If so, and the other subjects further from the camera are overexposed, maybe those are closer to the off camera flash?
