Got the exact same OS and OS settings between work and home?

You have to eliminate that as a variable, if you can. Could be Vista is digging through the file while it decompresses from the native PSD format to make sure it isn’t malicious.

Just a guess, regarding the speed of opening. And I don’t know what—if anything—that may have to do with the size of the swap file. 2.7 GB does seem a little high. But for a file of those pixel dimensions, you must have a ton of layers, containing a LOT of data for it to be 37 MB.

The file does have a lot of layers, something I wouldn’t have done myself but it was supplied by a client’s ad agency. The reason it has so many layers is because it contains several different layouts for a website. I suppose I could split them up into separate files on my home PC since it seems to handle it much better, but I was hoping there would be a simpler solution.

The configuration of my home machine is slightly beefier, though I wouldn’t think it’s enough to cause this much of a difference. I would definitely still notice a 2.4gb swapfile though. I’m running Home Premium there, and no virus scanner, but I would be surprised if that is the issue as I’ve never had problems like this before with AVG.

Are you sure that there is no "Big Data" I.E. data that extends after the border of the image?

To see it Image> Reveal all
To remove it: (if you are sure that the data is no needed: CTRL+A (select all) then, Image>Crop

Is the image in 8 bits? no unneeded alpha channels?
