Faster Core 2 Duo or Slower Quad Core for same price?

I saw Jeff Schewe’s comments in the lightroom forum that said that lightroom is noticeably faster because of it’s ability to use multiple (4 or 8) cores. So naturally I began wondering about the choice of 2 or 4 cores in today’s market as it pertains to Photoshop.

I could buy a 3.0GHz core 2 DUO OR a QUAD core @ 2.66GHz for the exact same price.

I am sure that the higher speed vs. multiple cores is affected by the type of processing done in Photoshop. For example if a lot of 3D work were being done in CS3 Extended, I am pretty sure that multiple cores would be the way to go. But if I was doing only normal processing without 3D or without heavy use of filters, I wonder if having a faster processor might be better.

Any thoughts?

And don`t forget, if Bridge is doing something in the background (for example updating some thumbs of the pics you`ve just processed in PS ….. or processing RAW files!) the Quad will outperform everything.
