James,

You have an error on your hyperlink, if that URL is intended to show something. I don’t find an EOS D20 (or EOS 20D) camera listed for Canon in their site, if that’s what you are trying to identify. You might wish to re-establish the URL.

The page has been removed by Canon. Apparently they are not ready to make this public. The page showed three photos of the new camera for the press to use.

James,

What’s the difference between the D20 and D30? I see that the D30 is listed. The D20 is newer?

Another link to unofficial photos in a forum. These look like the same camera I saw on the Canon site this morning.

Rumor has it that the specs will be released Friday. I’ve heard it is 8 megapixel and perhaps more buffering. The rest we will have to wait until the press release.

Better than the camera is the new EFS 10-22mm lens. Now we can have a true wide angle lens even with the 1.6 crop factor.

I think I’m going to part with some money for this one, unless they price it abusively (in which case I’ll look for a used 10D.)

It would be nice to get some real details, and a review.

My wish list over my 10D ……………..

USB 2.0 or Firewire
Longer computer/camera cable
Charge battery in camera
Get rid of the silly 1.6x factor
Correct the s/w error of not saving the picture taken date/time when auto rotate enabled

Wow 200 milliseconds warm up time that is only twice as long as the D70, quite the improvement.

Somehow, the difference between 100 milliseconds and 200 milliseconds just doesn’t seem significant to me. Maybe it’s because my body and brain have slowed to a leisurely crawl….

While I agree fully with you on this, I will bet you a dollar to doughnuts that there will be bubble heads who will get into a big fight over this issue alone.

Wow- you must have practised a long time to get the camera up to your eye 1/10 of a second after turning it on. Sounds like it could be an olympic event!

On the other hand, the 8 MP spec raises alarms with me. Many of the first generation of small chip, 8 megapixel cameras showed a very high amount of noise at even the lowest ISO rating. The extra pixels aren’t worth it to me if they come with excessive noise…

Chuck,

I have to say this passes me by. The CCD’s used in the non-SLR cameras are, to put it politely, very small compared to the sensors used by Canon, Nikon et al in their DSLRs. So to my small brain, even moving from 6 to 8MP will still leave individual photosite sizes well above those probably seen on non-SLR 4MP CCDs, which whilst not the last word in quality certainly weren’t berated for their excessive noise. Remember, the DSLR sensors are much bigger than the 8MP chip manufactured by Sony and used by everyone else!!

See this link, it kind of puts it into perspective.

< http://www.dpreview.com/learn/?/Glossary/Camera_System/Senso r_Sizes_01.htm>

Add to that the constant improvement in noise reduction technology both in the hardware and via software and I’m sure that we will see equal if not better noise than the previous generation of cameras.

It looks like there would have to be a serious increase in MP to reach the same pixel density of the 8MP sensors and hence the same noise issues.

I’m more disappointed that there doesn’t appear to be eye control focus on the 20D…. The 20D will be my entry point into DSLR, but boy am I going to miss the ECF on my 30v… πŸ™

Ian, I thought the CMOS chip in the Canon DSLR’s was of similar size to the CCD’s; my mistake. They’re certainly small relative to a 35 mm camera’s film area; hence the 1.6 multiplier.

I’ve never had ECV so I guess I don’t know what I’m missing. That always sounded like magic to me anyway…. πŸ™‚

Thanks for the link!
