Problem with Transparent background

I am using PS6.1. I have used the magic background eraser to erase a portion of a photograph. I want to keep that portion as a transparent part of the photo. However, when I save the image as a jpeg it fills the transparency with white. Don’t want that. What am I doing wrong. Thanks for your help.

JPG doesn’t support transparency. Save as PSD.

Bob, thanks for the reply.
Yes, I know I can save in psd format, problem is I want to upload to a program that only supports jpeg or gif. Now what.
