The box that Photoshop came in says you need a pentium processor. Will it operate with a AMD athlon xp-m2000?

Yup. It’s just that Adobe doesn’t use AMDs during development, so it hasn’t been tested on anything besides Pentiums. There are a lot of people who run Elements on AMDs, including me – although a different processor from the one you’ve got.

Beth is right. What Adobe really means is that you need a Pentium class processor. A really old computer with a wimpy processor would bog down far too much under the weight of the processing required. But AMD processors are fine; there are very few programs out there which use the special instructions specific to each processor (which would cause issues.) Most everything (excepting certain scientific programs) is compiled to use the generic instruction set which both processors support.
