I’ve discovered another way to use the crop tool… Just make four selection (one for each side), with your favorite selection tool (rectangular or elliptical marquee tool, lasso tool, etc.) Then click on Image / Crop, and PSE2 will automatically crop the image to the furthest point of the each selection.
