Hello.

When working with photoshop CS2, something mystifies me about working with layer masks. Sometimes, when working with multiple layer masks I find
it useful to toggle to the rubylith display for the layer mask and in this mode,
I switch between editing different layer masks. At this point, sometimes it occurs that the paintbrush tool seems to alternate between the shape set in the brush options and having a hard-edged square shape.

I have some screenshots here to illustrate this phenomenon.

As can be seen in this first screenshot, I’m working with two layers and each of them has a layermask:

I’ve changed the Layer Mask Display options, so the rubylith will be displayed in a turquoise color:

Now here is the situation right before the effect occurs. I’ve enabled the rubylith display of one of the layer masks and I switched to the other
layermask to draw on that, to see how the rubylith display will handle that:

Here I’ve drawn a single stroke with the brush and you can see that it looks very weird and I can’t imagine this is an intentional effect:

As can be seen in the last screenshot, the brush displays a very weird effect, but as soon as I’m above the white area in the layer mask of layer 1, it temporarily works normally, but above the black area in that layer mask, the shape of the brush is squareshaped with a hard edge.
Surely this must be a bug of some sort?
Wouldn’t it be better if the rubylith mode toggled off as soon as you would try to paint on a different layer mask than the one for which the rubylith mode was enabled? Or, alternatively, painting on any of several layer masks should switch the rubylith mode to being enabled for that particular layer mask that’s being worked on.
Is this a know bug and has this been fixed in an update or perhaps in photoshop CS3?

Kind regards and thanks in advance for any feedback about this issue, Niek
