I had a friend in this weekend and we went to Yankee Boy Basin in the San Juan mountains by Ouray, Colorado on Saturday and attended a Little Britches Rodeo this morning. We were able to get some good shots at both places. For anyone interested the link is:

Hi James…Amazed at the youngness of the cowkids! You did get some great action shots. My favorite of landscapes was the Reflections 2. Just beautiful! What lovely views you have around you. Oh. and the fawn is soooooo sweet, plus being a great shot. Good focusing all around.

The waterfall is wonderful! Great photos, thanks for posting them. We just got home from a great vacation too in northern Maine, came back to civilization which I would love to avoid for the summer if only we could.

Thank you very much Do. We had two great days of photography and the guest I had in is an excellent photographer and one of the better digital photo magicians I have known.

Thanks Jane! We have some tourist here in Cedaredge and plenty in Ouray but to get to where we were photographing yesterday you need a pretty agile 4-wheel drive so it was not very crowded.

Beautiful. It’s been too long since I’ve been West.

Is the fawn Mule Deer or Elk?

I really like the waterfalls. Just the right shutter speed to get a little motion without losing the power of falling water.

James,

Your shots are great. The fawn just blew me away. I’m amazed you could get so close, I’d have thought it would have been very skittish.

I never knew there was a "kids" rodeo circuit. Guess they have to learn somewhere.

Thanks Bob! The fawn is a mulie and appeared to be a couple of weeks old. I normally bracket my exposures at falls because they can be problematic, I just got lucky on these.

Thanks Dick. I stayed about 20 feet away and downwind so as not to get any human odor on the fawn so that the mother wouldn’t abandon it. I have almost stepped on them several times in the woods. A fawn will normally not move until the mother shows up to get it regardless of what happens. All too often someone sees a fawn with no mother in site and will try to pet or even worse, rescue it.

The Little Britches Rodeo Association has been around for quite a while now. This was the 46th or 47th annual event in Cedaredge. They have events for those as young as 4 I believe. The event I like most is the mini-cowboys (4,5,6 &7) in the Mutton Bustin (sheep riding). It’s amazing to see some of these 30 pound children on a quarter horse at full speed doing many of the same events the adults do.

James,

You are right. It’s been around for a long time. Though they probably were not part of a formal organization kid’s rodeos were a fairly regular event in Texas in the mid ’40s and probably before that. Calf riding instead of bronks and bulls but they got quite a workout. No, I didn’t participate. I could fall off a horse all on my on at that age.
