I lose the paintbrush image after saving a project

After saving a project I’m working on I often lose the paintbrush image and all that appears on the screen are crosshairs regardless of the size of the brush I was using. This happens whether I save as a jpeg or psd, I haven’t tried using any other file formats. It still works this way but I can’t see the brush. Closing the program for a while then going back to it seems to be the only way of recovering it. I would appreciate hearing from anyone else who has experienced this problem or who knows how to fix it.

I’m using a PC with WinXP Pro and 1G ram.
