I have a line of type on its own layer in a PS file. I want to change the color of the type, but I cannot select it. Every time I select the type layer and then use the text tool and click over the type, I get a new layer.

How do I select and edit the type?

Double click the T icon in the layers palette.

There is no T in that layer.

then it’s probably been rasterized, which means it’s no longer editable as type. iow, it’s become an image of the original type.

When and how does rasterization take place? Is there a way to keep layers of type as editable?

there’s usually a warning that you have to ok, but off the top of my head, and if i remember correctly things like "free transform" and certain filters on the type layer will rasterize it.
