I have Photoshop CS on Windows XP. I have a .psd file that I wish to save. When I save the file as a .jpg (Save As) the color (background bottom layer) changes slightly when I re-open the .jpg file. There is a black drop shadow included near the background color. Is the problem color sync?, color profile?, work space? or Save as Web?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This question was asked for Save for Web but answer was unclear.

Whatever you have set up as your working space, you should always convert an image to sRGB before you save it for use on the Web. This is because the majority of image viewers, including web browsers, are not colour managed and their effective colour space approximates sRGB.

For this reason it is also imperitive you profle your monitor correctly so Photoshop "sees" the same colours as the non colour managed world.

It is going to be difficult to nail the problem you are having without knowing more about how your system is set up. Can you post a screen grab of your colour settings dialogue? Also, I’m not sure what you mean about the drop shadow. Does it only appear after saving? Could you also post the image in question.

<http://www.pixentral.com> is a good place to do this.

Meanwhile, you should also spend a little time reading up on colour management at <http://www.computer-darkroom.com>
